Description

After years of abuse by her husband, police officer Norman Daniels, Rosie realizes that staying may cost her life. She escapes to an unfamiliar Midwestern city, where a women’s shelter helps her find housing, friendship, and work as a hotel maid. Her tentative independence acquires a supernatural dimension when a painting of a woman in a rose-madder gown begins to change and opens into another world. There, Rose Madder asks Rosie to enter a labyrinth and rescue a baby from a monstrous bull. Meanwhile, Norman uses his skills and authority to track Rosie, attacking those who assist her. The novel joins a survivor’s struggle to build a new identity with mythic horror, making both the pursuing husband and the labyrinth embodiments of violent control.
