In the Southern California suburb of Santo Donato, outwardly accomplished teenager Todd Bowden identifies elderly Arthur Denker as a Nazi war criminal living under an assumed identity. Fascinated by the Holocaust but seeking neither justice nor confession, Todd threatens exposure unless Denker recounts his crimes in intimate detail. Their meetings soon become an abusive contest for control, with Todd forcing the former officer to reenact Nazi rituals while Denker learns enough about the boy’s deceptions to retaliate. As Todd’s schoolwork deteriorates and nightmares invade both lives, curiosity hardens into mutual dependency and violent compulsion. The story treats evil not as distant history but as an appetite cultivated through secrecy, coercion, and the desire to experience another person’s cruelty secondhand.
