After their father dies and leaves the family in financial distress, Cathy Dollanganger and her three siblings are taken to Foxworth Hall, their mother’s wealthy family home in Virginia. Instead of being welcomed, the children are concealed in an upstairs room adjoining the attic while their mother tries to regain her dying father’s favor. Their grandmother enforces harsh rules, contact with the outside world disappears, and promised freedom keeps receding as their mother’s visits grow less frequent. With isolation and neglect threatening the younger children’s health, Cathy and her older brother must question the adults controlling them and consider escape. The novel turns a Gothic family secret into a claustrophobic story of dependence, betrayal, and survival.
