New England artist Clay Riddell is in Boston when a mysterious cell-phone signal called the Pulse turns users into violent, mindless attackers. As civilization collapses around him, Clay joins Thomas McCourt and fifteen-year-old Alice Maxwell in a dangerous journey north toward Maine, where he hopes to find his young son. Their route crosses a devastated landscape in which ordinary communications have become lethal and survivors cannot predict how the infected will behave. At Gaiten Academy, the group learns that the attackers are developing into a coordinated hive mind with psychic powers capable of sending visions and commands. Driven toward a Maine destination called Kashwak, Clay must pursue his family while resisting an enemy that is becoming less chaotic, more organized, and increasingly able to enter survivors’ minds.
