As a child in Massachusetts, Vic McQueen discovers that a covered bridge can carry her directly to lost objects, though every journey exacts a growing physical and mental price. Her strange ability leads her to Maggie Leigh, who reads glimpses of the future in Scrabble tiles, and then toward Charles Manx, an ageless-seeming predator who abducts children in a vintage Rolls-Royce. Manx takes them to Christmasland, an uncanny amusement park where celebration has curdled into permanent menace. After teenage Vic reaches his Colorado home and attempts a rescue, she tries to build an adult life beyond what she encountered. Years later, when Christmasland’s children threaten her son, she must confront Manx and the dangerous power that once connected their hidden worlds.
