Thomas Harris’s Red Dragon follows former FBI profiler Will Graham as he reluctantly returns to investigative work after an earlier case left him severely damaged, physically and psychologically. His target is an elusive serial murderer who attacks apparently unrelated families during successive full moons. Graham reconstructs the ritualized crime scenes and follows a distinctive red-dragon symbol, but the investigation eventually stalls. Seeking insight, he consults the imprisoned Hannibal Lecter, whose clues come entangled with a disturbing claim that Graham resembles the killer. The murderer’s fixation on William Blake’s Red Dragon image, and his belief that violence can transform him into that figure, deepen the novel’s blend of criminal investigation and psychological horror.
