In Castle Rock, Maine, during the summer of 1960, twelve-year-old Gordie LaChance and three friends set out along the railroad tracks to find the body of a missing boy. They imagine an adventure, but the trek exposes them to a hostile dog, an oncoming train, leech-filled water, and the fears they carry from troubled homes. Gordie, still grieving his older brother and living with emotionally absent parents, also tells stories that reveal how imagination helps him approach pain he cannot discuss directly. Recalled by the adult Gordie, the journey becomes a clear-eyed coming-of-age novella about friendship, class, mortality, and the narrow futures awaiting boys in a factory town.
