In 1978, obsessive reader Morris Bellamy robs reclusive novelist John Rothstein, taking cash and notebooks filled with unpublished writing before hiding them in a buried trunk. Decades later, financially struggling teenager Pete Saubers discovers the cache. He quietly uses the money to support his parents and becomes absorbed in Rothstein's work, but the notebooks prove harder to manage when he tries to sell them. A dealer recognizes their value and begins blackmailing him just as Morris leaves prison determined to reclaim what he buried. Bill Hodges and Holly Gibney enter a conflict driven by two dangerously different forms of literary devotion. The crime novel turns ownership of a fictional character's unwritten future into a struggle over art, desperation, and possession.
