If It Bleeds brings together four previously unpublished Stephen King novellas: “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone,” “The Life of Chuck,” “If It Bleeds,” and “Rat.” The title story follows detective Holly Gibney as she notices something troubling about a television correspondent covering a school bombing. Her investigation becomes her first solo case and serves as a stand-alone continuation of The Outsider. Although the four works tell distinct stories, the collection moves across horror and suspense while also making room for humor and a broad emotional range. Together, the novellas showcase King working at shorter length through varied tones and approaches to unsettling fiction.
