Recently retired detective Bill Hodges is lonely and disillusioned when a taunting letter draws him back to the case he could not solve: a Mercedes driven into a job-fair crowd, killing eight people and injuring many others. Believing the writer responsible, Hodges pursues the case outside official police channels and discovers a renewed sense of purpose. The investigation expands when a dead woman’s sister hires him, while Holly and Jerome join his efforts. Meanwhile, the emotionally disturbed man behind the letter uses his work and delivery route to observe Hodges and the people around him, turning the renewed investigation into a dangerous struggle conducted beyond the usual boundaries of police work.
