Washington homicide detective and forensic psychiatrist Alex Cross confronts a criminal who calls himself the Mastermind. A sequence of meticulously planned bank robberies has left employees, customers, and police officers dead, yet the violence appears to serve a design larger than theft. As Cross studies the perpetrator’s methods and psychology, the Mastermind turns the investigation into a private contest in which one mistaken judgment can prove fatal. The case becomes more dangerous when the killer threatens both Washington and Cross’s family. Already struggling with a crisis at home, Cross must protect the people closest to him while pursuing an adversary who anticipates investigative procedure. The novel combines police work, psychological gamesmanship, and domestic strain in an increasingly personal hunt.
