Description

Burke Devore spent twenty-five years building a respectable life as a paper-company manager, husband, and provider. After cost cutting eliminates his job, eighteen months of applications and interviews leave him unemployed, isolated from his family, and desperate to recover the status he assumed hard work would protect. Convinced that one suitable position could restore everything, Burke identifies seven local men whose qualifications make them potential rivals. He begins removing those obstacles with the same cold planning he once brought to business. As his campaign grows increasingly violent, ordinary corporate language becomes a cover for moral collapse. The novel is a bleakly comic crime story about layoffs, masculine identity, and the lethal logic of treating people as competitors in a shrinking market.
