In suburban Pennsylvania in 1978, awkward teenager Arnie Cunningham becomes captivated by a decaying 1958 Plymouth Fury whose owner calls her Christine. He buys the car despite his friend Dennis’s alarm and begins restoring it at a local garage. As Christine regains her former beauty, Arnie grows confident but also withdrawn, cynical, and disturbingly similar to her previous owner. His new girlfriend, Leigh, soon senses that the Fury behaves less like a possession than a jealous rival. Dennis investigates the car’s violent history while suspicious incidents draw the attention of a state detective, leaving him and Leigh to confront the force tightening its hold on Arnie. The novel turns teenage devotion to a first car into horror about obsession, possessiveness, and a friendship being steadily displaced.
