Laura lives an isolated life with her father and servants in a castle in nineteenth-century Styria. After a carriage accident leaves the beautiful Carmilla in their care, Laura welcomes the chance for companionship—and is unsettled to discover that each girl remembers the other from a childhood dream. Their intimacy deepens, but Carmilla’s romantic advances mingle with secrecy, nocturnal wandering, strange moods, and a refusal to eat. As young women nearby fall mysteriously ill, Laura’s attraction becomes inseparable from physical weakness and mounting dread. Narrated by Laura as a remembered ordeal, the Gothic novella builds its vampire story through charged uncertainty, exploring desire, sexual identity, innocence, and the danger of recognizing corruption only after it has entered the home.
