Physicist Lionel Barrett enters Maine’s notorious Belasco House with his wife Edith and two mediums, Florence Tanner and Benjamin Fischer, to spend a week testing whether consciousness survives death. Once the home of the depraved Emeric Belasco, the mansion carries a history of blasphemy, violence, and psychic contamination. Barrett’s scientific skepticism collides with Florence’s faith, Fischer’s wary experience, and Edith’s mounting fear as the house probes their private desires and resentments. Apparitions and physical assaults make the inquiry increasingly dangerous, while contradictory evidence turns the haunting into a mystery. The novel traps competing explanations inside a hostile space where certainty itself becomes a vulnerability.
