In the 1980s, the vampire Lestat de Lioncourt answers Louis’s account of their history by publishing his own autobiography and becoming the frontman of a rock band. He seeks fame partly to expose vampires to humanity and partly to summon figures from his past. His narrative reaches back to an impoverished eighteenth-century family, his escape into Paris’s theater world, and the centuries-old vampire who abducted and forcibly transformed him. Immortality brings power but also an unstable relationship with human victims and the remnants of his former identity. Lestat’s refusal to hide eventually pits him against Armand and a coven hostile to contact with humanity, creating a gothic chronicle of reinvention, appetite, rebellion, and self-mythology.
