A young governess accepts sole responsibility for Miles and Flora at Bly, a remote country estate whose owner insists that she never trouble him. The children appear charming, but Miles has been expelled from school for unexplained reasons, and their behavior soon acquires an unsettling secrecy. The governess begins seeing an unknown man and woman around the grounds. She learns that they resemble Peter Quint and Miss Jessel, former employees who were closely involved with the children before their deaths, and becomes convinced that the apparitions intend to reclaim them. Yet no independent account fully confirms what she sees. Henry James turns a ghost story into a study of perception, authority, and obsession, sustaining uncertainty over whether Bly is haunted or the governess is imposing terror upon it.
