In Victorian England, young aristocrat Dorian Gray sits for a portrait painted by his devoted friend Basil. Entranced by Lord Henry Wotton’s creed of beauty, pleasure, and self-indulgence, Dorian wishes that the painting might age while he remains young. The wish takes hold: his face preserves its innocence, but the hidden portrait registers the corruption and cruelty of his conduct. Dorian’s courtship of the poor Shakespearean actress Sibyl Vane tests how completely he has absorbed Lord Henry’s values, while his secrecy strains his bond with Basil. Blending Gothic horror with glittering social comedy and philosophical argument, the novel asks what becomes of conscience when reputation and appearance no longer reveal the life beneath them.
