In Milburn, New York, four aging friends gather as the Chowder Society to drink, dine, and exchange frightening stories. After one member dies and the survivors begin suffering the same nightmares, their private ritual turns into an inquiry about a woman they knew in their youth and the secret they have guarded ever since. Don Wanderley, a younger writer drawn to Milburn after a death in his own family, joins them as uncanny events spread through the snowbound town. Elsewhere, an anxious young man holds a strangely passive girl calling herself Angie Maule in a shabby Florida motel, a disturbing scene whose meaning shadows the larger tale. Straub builds these converging fears into a layered novel about guilt, storytelling, memory, and the return of buried violence.
