As vampire rock star Lestat prepares for a San Francisco concert, scattered immortals experience the same dreams of red-haired twins while members of their kind begin dying by spontaneous combustion. Their separate stories converge around Lestat’s music, which has awakened Akasha, the ancient queen from whom vampire history descends. She chooses Lestat as an unwilling consort and advances a violent plan to remake human society, demanding obedience from the vampires gathering against her. Through Maharet’s account of the twins and a history reaching back to ancient Egypt, the immediate crisis becomes an inquiry into the species’ origins. The third Vampire Chronicles novel combines gothic horror, mythic history, and an ensemble confrontation over power, survival, and utopian violence.
