Hercule Poirot and Captain Hastings travel to Merlinville-sur-Mer after Paul Renauld summons Poirot to northern France, only to arrive after Renauld has been found stabbed and buried beside a golf course. His wife describes a nighttime abduction, but concealed money, possible blackmail, and a mysterious visitor point toward a past the dead man kept hidden. Poirot must also contend with a hostile Paris detective whose methods and conclusions challenge his own. As Poirot traces parallels with a decades-old French murder, Hastings becomes entangled with a young woman who examines the crime scene and disappears with the weapon. Competing investigators, romantic loyalties, and recycled patterns of violence turn the case into a puzzle about whether history is repeating itself or being deliberately imitated.
