A wealthy man’s funeral gathers his relatives around an inheritance, but the expected family ritual turns ominous when his sister abruptly declares that he was murdered. After she is found dead, her accusation casts new doubt on the first death and brings Hercule Poirot into the case. Every family member has a possible financial motive, while competing recollections of the funeral reveal how little the relatives agree about what they saw and heard. Clues hidden in the second victim’s paintings complicate the inquiry, and further poisoning and assault make the danger immediate. Agatha Christie builds the mystery from money, memory, and family resentment, testing whether an apparently careless remark exposed a crime or helped create one.
