Aboard the luxurious Blue Train bound for the French Riviera, Hercule Poirot meets Katherine Grey and Ruth Kettering, an American heiress escaping an unhappy marriage to rejoin a former lover. By morning, Ruth lies murdered in her compartment, and a valuable ruby has vanished. The police concentrate on her lover, but Poirot doubts the obvious explanation; suspicion also reaches Ruth's estranged husband, who traveled on the same train. As Poirot reconstructs the passengers' movements and tests their accounts, wealth, romance, theft, and murder become difficult to separate. Agatha Christie turns the enclosed journey into a puzzle of compromised appearances and competing motives, with the train's glamour providing cover for secrets that continue onto the Riviera.
