Dr. James Sheppard narrates from King’s Abbot, the English village where he lives with his sister Caroline. The suicide of Mrs. Ferrars has already prompted local speculation when wealthy widower Roger Ackroyd asks Sheppard for an urgent private conversation about blackmail. Ackroyd is soon found murdered in his study, creating a locked-room-style mystery involving his own dagger. A missing letter, footprints at a window, and the disappearance of his stepson Ralph Paton make Ralph the principal suspect. Convinced of Ralph’s innocence, Flora asks retired detective Hercule Poirot to investigate. Poirot questions the household while confronting the tightly constrained opportunity in which the murder could have occurred.
