Eight invited strangers arrive on an isolated island off the Devon coast, where servants await them and their supposed hosts remain absent. After dinner, a gramophone voice accuses every person in the house of causing another’s death. A nursery rhyme and ten figurines soon supply a pattern: early deaths echo the verses, and a figure vanishes each time. With no outsider found, the survivors must accept that the murderer is among them. Retired judge Wargrave urges searches and secured weapons, but missing objects and unexplained movements turn every precaution into another source of fear. The novel is a tightly contained mystery about guilt, punishment, and suspicion under mortal pressure.
