In Paris, two women are discovered brutally murdered inside a locked fourth-floor room on the Rue Morgue. Witnesses heard two voices, yet their contradictory accounts cannot even establish the language spoken by one of them. When the police arrest a bank clerk on weak evidence, C. Auguste Dupin undertakes his own inquiry, observed by the unnamed companion who shares his secluded rooms. Dupin treats confusion as evidence: he compares testimony, studies the physical scene, and reconstructs how an apparently impossible entrance might have occurred. The story builds its mystery around the difference between merely noticing details and reasoning from them, pairing macabre violence with a cool demonstration of analytical detection and the limits of official investigation.
