Nine-year-old Trisha becomes separated from her family during a hike after stepping away from an argument and falling down an embankment. Lost deep in the forest with scant supplies, she follows a creek but travels farther into the wilderness while police and volunteers search the wrong area. Hunger, thirst, injury, and isolation steadily erode her judgment. Her Walkman and devotion to baseball player Tom Gordon offer companionship and a model of composure, yet fear begins producing visions and the conviction that something supernatural is stalking her. The novel narrows psychological horror to one child’s struggle through the woods, keeping the threat poised between predator and hallucination as Trisha tries to preserve practical courage and sanity in the face of apparent death.
