Mary Crane steals a large sum of money, hoping to clear her boyfriend Sam’s debts and make marriage possible, then loses her way while fleeing. She stops at the nearly abandoned Bates Motel, stranded by a rerouted highway and managed by the awkward, isolated Norman Bates. Over dinner, Norman describes life beneath the control of his domineering mother, and the conversation persuades Mary to return the money. Instead, she disappears into the motel’s atmosphere of secrecy and violence. Her sister Lila and Sam join a private investigator searching for both Mary and the cash, drawing closer to Norman’s troubled household. The novel combines a missing-person investigation with psychological horror centered on repression, dependency, and the unstable stories people tell about themselves.
