Frodo Baggins inherits a plain gold ring from his elderly cousin Bilbo and learns that it is the One Ring, forged by the Dark Lord Sauron to dominate the other Rings of Power. To keep it from its maker, Frodo must leave the sheltered Shire and carry it south through Middle-earth, pursued by Sauron’s servants. Friends accompany him through alternating refuge and danger until his private burden becomes a common cause, drawing together representatives of the world’s free peoples. Their road crosses wild country, hostile territory, and ancient ruins, while the Ring’s power threatens to tempt and divide those nearest it. The Fellowship of the Ring begins an epic quest shaped equally by companionship, moral endurance, and the corrupting weight of power.
