In the pastoral Shire, Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin join a quest to destroy the One Ring, which the Dark Lord Sauron created to dominate the other Rings of Power. Their journey expands across Middle-earth, where they are aided by a fellowship of wizard, human, elven, and dwarven companions. As the fellowship works to rally the Free Peoples against Sauron’s armies, it also seeks to give Frodo the chance to complete the quest. This epic high-fantasy novel moves from the Shire into a vast world of distinctive peoples and places. Its major concerns include good and evil, fate and free will, the corrupting danger of power, and death versus immortality, while language and its ties to peoples and places recur throughout.
