Farm boy Eragon discovers what appears to be a mysterious stone in the mountains, only to watch it hatch into the dragon Saphira. Their bond makes him a Dragon Rider and draws the attention of agents serving King Galbatorix. After Eragon’s home is attacked and his uncle is fatally wounded, he flees with Saphira and the storyteller Brom, determined to hunt the Ra’zac responsible. The pursuit carries them across Alagaësia while Brom teaches Eragon swordsmanship, magic, languages, and the traditions of the Riders. Revenge gradually expands into a larger struggle over power and allegiance, as an inexperienced boy must understand the dangerous inheritance created by his connection to a dragon.
