After the Fellowship is broken, the quest divides into two interlaced journeys across Middle-earth. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli pursue the Orcs who carried away Merry and Pippin, only to become entangled in Rohan’s struggle against Saruman and the forces of Isengard. Far to the east, Frodo and Sam continue toward Mordor with the Ruling Ring, shadowed and then guided by the treacherous Gollum, whose need for the Ring makes him both indispensable and dangerous. As armies gather and old powers awaken, each group must act without knowing whether the others remain alive or whether the larger quest can still succeed. The novel expands the saga from a single fellowship into parallel ordeals of warfare, loyalty, temptation, and endurance.
