Bilbo Baggins is a home-loving hobbit whose quiet life in Middle-earth ends when wizard Gandalf arrives with thirteen dwarves. Led by Thorin Oakenshield, heir to a kingdom beneath the Lonely Mountain, the company intends to reclaim its homeland and treasure from the dragon Smaug. Gandalf assigns the wholly inexperienced Bilbo the role of burglar, drawing him from peaceful country lanes into a journey of escalating danger. Trolls, secret markings on a map, goblins, and the passage through the Misty Mountains repeatedly test skills he does not know he possesses. When he becomes separated underground and meets the mysterious Gollum, survival depends on a contest of riddles. The children's fantasy traces Bilbo's growth from reluctant traveler to resourceful participant while asking what courage and heroism require.
