About J.R.R. Tolkien
J. R. R. Tolkien was an English writer and philologist whose fantasy joins adventure to invented history, language, and myth. An Oxford professor of Anglo-Saxon and later English Language and Literature, he built Middle-earth from distinctive peoples and places, layered histories, and languages tied to both. His prose changes with the scale of the story. The Hobbit uses a lighter, witty narrative manner to move Bilbo from domestic routine through episodic dangers, including a contest of riddles. The Lord of the Rings broadens into lyrical, densely descriptive epic, advancing through long journeys, alternating refuge and threat, and parallel story lines whose characters must act without knowing how the others have fared. Rather than following a single continuous plot, The Silmarillion assembles creation story, chronicle, ancient narrative, and supporting record into an imaginative history of the same world. Objects and choices carry sustained moral pressure in Tolkien's fiction. The Ring tempts and divides, while courage often takes the form of persistence by small figures caught in conflicts larger than their understanding.
