Thad Beaumont is a recovering alcoholic novelist in Ludlow, Maine, respected for serious fiction that scarcely sells and secretly successful as George Stark, the name attached to brutal crime novels. When his pseudonym is exposed, Thad and his wife publicly bury Stark in a staged cemetery ceremony. Soon, people involved in the disclosure are attacked, and evidence points impossibly toward Thad: his fingerprints appear at crime scenes, messages arrive in his handwriting, and violent nightmares seem to reveal acts he cannot remember committing. As a skeptical sheriff closes in, Stark takes on a terrifying physical existence of his own. The Dark Half turns a writer’s divided career into supernatural horror about authorship, addiction, commercial appetite, and a created identity that refuses to remain fictional.
