Nick Corey is the sole sheriff of Pottsville, a small town where nearly everyone considers him harmless, lazy, and dim-witted. Nick encourages that judgment because it lets him collect bribes, avoid arrests, and conceal a coldly calculating nature. When two pimps humiliate him and a county attorney warns that an electoral challenger may take his job, maintaining his comfortable position begins to require increasingly serious crimes. Narrating his own schemes in a genial, self-pitying voice, Nick manipulates the town’s corruption, prejudices, and private weaknesses while insisting that circumstances leave him no choice. The result is a bleakly comic crime novel built around the gap between folksy authority and predatory power.
