Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, an unloved orphan in eighteenth-century France, possesses an extraordinary sense of smell. He can separate the countless odors surrounding him with perfect precision, yet his own body produces no scent. Drawn to fragrances that inspire desire and affection, he apprentices himself to tradesmen and perfume makers, mastering techniques for capturing and combining them. His talent becomes an obsession after he encounters a girl whose scent seems uniquely beautiful. Determined to preserve such human fragrance, Grenouille turns to murder and treats other people as raw material for an imagined masterpiece. The novel builds its historical world through odor rather than appearance, using one man’s sensory genius to examine beauty, possession, emotional manipulation, and the unsettling power people grant to scent.
