Two former student radicals emerge from prison carrying the bomb-making skills and unfinished grudges of the 1960s into contemporary Detroit. Convinced that a onetime comrade became an informant, they set out for revenge with an appetite for destruction that turns old political loyalties into present criminal danger. Detroit police officer Chris Mankowski is assigned to contain them, placing a cop between volatile conspirators and the targets of their resentment. The pursuit unfolds as a blackly comic crime story in which practiced violence, wounded pride, and opportunism matter more than revolutionary ideals. Elmore Leonard uses the collision between faded radicalism and police work to examine what remains when a generation's grand causes harden into private scores.
