Ernesto “Chili” Palmer is a small-time Miami loan shark whose operation falls under the control of an old rival. Sent after a delinquent client, Chili follows the trail through Las Vegas to Hollywood, where collecting a debt from horror producer Harry Zimm opens a more enticing possibility. Chili pitches Zimm a movie drawn from an actual criminal affair, disguising the truth as fiction and discovering that the film business runs on many of the same instincts as organized crime: leverage, bluffing, intimidation, and appetite. His attempt to trade Miami’s grind for a place among dreammakers and hustlers draws dangerous attention. The result is a dryly comic crime novel about storytelling as both an artistic ambition and a confidence game.
