William Collins, a former boxer with a lethal incident behind him, escapes from a mental institution for the fourth time and tries to pass as the friendly, polished man he can sometimes be. His control is fragile, especially when provoked. After falling in with a genial con man and a provocative woman, Collins is drawn into a scheme built around kidnapping and shadowed by the prospect of murder. The question is not simply whether the crime will work, but whether Collins understands the people manipulating him—or the violence within himself. Thompson’s psychological noir keeps its focus tight on unstable alliances, compromised motives, and a narrator whose courteous surface cannot make his perceptions safe or reliable.
