Description

Known only as the kid, a Tennessee runaway enters the borderlands of nineteenth-century Texas and Mexico at fourteen. His movement west carries him through assault, arson, and indiscriminate brutality before a failed filibuster expedition leaves him among the remnants of John Joel Glanton’s scalp-hunting gang. Hired to collect Apache scalps, the gang soon turns fraud and slaughter against Mexican villagers and other civilians, making violence a business without stable loyalties or limits. Among its members is the learned, enigmatic Judge Holden, whose presence gives the expedition a disturbing philosophical dimension. Written in stark images and biblical cadences, this anti-Western Gothic novel strips conquest of heroic mythology and confronts the appetite for domination embedded in frontier history.
