Description

After an unspecified catastrophe destroys industrial civilization and nearly all life, a father and his young son walk south through an ash-covered United States. They push their few belongings in a shopping cart, scavenging for food while the father’s health steadily fails. Hunger and exposure are constant threats, but marauders and cannibals make encounters with other survivors even more dangerous; the pair has only two bullets for protection. The father tells the boy that they are good people who carry the fire, a belief tested whenever survival conflicts with compassion or sharing. Spare and bleak, the novel turns their journey into an examination of parental love and moral endurance in a world where preserving humanity may demand as much courage as staying alive.
