Sixteen-year-old John Grady Cole grows up on his grandfather’s Texas ranch, but the property is set to be sold after his grandfather dies. Rather than move into town, John Grady rides into Mexico with his friend Lacey Rawlins to seek cowboy work. Near the border, they join the younger Jimmy Blevins, whose disputed horse and lost pistol draw them into danger and pursuit. John Grady and Rawlins later find work on a ranch in Coahuila, where John Grady’s horsemanship earns him a position training and breeding horses. His romance with the owner’s daughter, Alejandra, carries social risks, and Mexican rangers eventually arrest and threaten the boys.
