Jane Eyre narrates her passage from an abused childhood at Gateshead through deprivation and education at Lowood School to employment as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There she meets Edward Rochester, the estate’s brooding master, and falls in love despite differences of wealth, age, and power. Their growing attachment tests the independence Jane has struggled to build, while later attention from an earnest clergyman cousin presents another future shaped by duty rather than desire. Set in northern England during the reign of George III, the novel combines intimate psychological development with Gothic tension and social criticism. Jane’s insistence on moral and spiritual equality gives the story its central force as she confronts class, religion, sexuality, and the demands placed upon women.
