Cornelius Suttree has abandoned family privilege and conventional respectability for a houseboat on the Tennessee River near Knoxville, where he survives by fishing and watches life pass along the city’s neglected margins. His days bring him among squatters, criminals, prostitutes, hermits, and alcoholics, including Gene Harrogate, a dimwitted ex-convict whose reckless schemes repeatedly invite disaster. Yet Suttree remains partly detached from the community he inhabits, carrying private memories through bouts of solitude, companionship, and self-destruction. Told through flashbacks, shifting perspectives, lyrical intensity, grotesque comedy, and melancholy, the fragmented novel follows a man seeking dignity without certainty that withdrawal can free him from family, history, or his own capacity for ruin.
