Sailor Charles Marlow recounts taking command of a steamboat for a Belgian trading company in the colonial Congo Free State. His assignment is to travel inland and reach Kurtz, a celebrated ivory agent whose reputation grows more compelling as reliable information about him diminishes. Before Marlow can proceed upriver, he encounters sick African railroad workers, ruined landscapes, bureaucratic waste, and a wrecked boat that takes months to repair. The deeper he enters the company’s domain, the more its claims of civilization conflict with the exploitation and disorder before him. Marlow’s physical journey toward Kurtz becomes an inward confrontation with fascination, complicity, and moral instability. The novella’s layered narration and oppressive atmosphere examine colonial power and the fragile distinctions Europeans draw between civilization and savagery.
