In Puritan Massachusetts, Hester Prynne emerges from prison carrying her infant daughter, Pearl, and wearing the scarlet A imposed as punishment for adultery. Publicly humiliated before the colony, she refuses to identify Pearl’s father and accepts an isolated life at the edge of the community. Hester supports them through fine needlework and quietly aids the poor, yet neither service nor repentance frees mother and child from scrutiny. Pearl’s unruly independence further unsettles neighbors who treat private suffering as evidence for public judgment. Set between 1642 and 1649, the novel examines how legalism and religious authority turn sin into spectacle, while secrecy distributes guilt unevenly among those who confess, conceal, condemn, and endure.
