In post–Civil War Cincinnati, Sethe lives with her eighteen-year-old daughter Denver at 124 Bluestone Road, a house haunted by what the family believes is the ghost of Sethe’s eldest daughter. Both mother and daughter inhabit an isolation shaped by slavery’s violence and by memories that refuse to remain in the past. Their fragile household changes when Paul D, a man who knew Sethe during enslavement, arrives and imagines a different future with her. Soon afterward, a mysterious young woman calling herself Beloved appears and draws the family’s buried history toward the surface. Moving between memory and the supernatural, the novel explores motherhood, trauma, freedom, and the intimate struggle to build a life after dehumanization.
