Jack Torrance, a struggling writer and recovering alcoholic, accepts a winter caretaker position at the isolated Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. His wife, Wendy, and young son, Danny, join him, hoping the quiet season will give the family a fresh start. Danny, however, can read minds, glimpse the future, and perceive the hotel’s buried horrors; his psychic presence awakens ghosts, violent memories, and even threatening topiary animals. When snow cuts the Overlook off from the outside world, its supernatural forces exploit Jack’s resentment, frustrated ambitions, and addiction. The novel turns a family’s confinement into a study of inherited violence, damaged trust, and the terrifying ease with which a hostile place can magnify human weakness.
