Eleanor Vance has spent years caring for her invalid mother and arrives at Hill House hungry for a life beyond duty and isolation. She joins occult scholar Dr. Montague, the lively Theodora, and Luke, the estate’s future heir, for an experiment meant to produce convincing evidence of a haunting. The house offers plenty: impossible architecture, pounding doors, cold spots, messages, and disturbances that seem to single Eleanor out. As the group debates whether these events are supernatural or psychological, Hill House’s influence grows more intimate, and Eleanor’s desire to belong becomes dangerously entangled with the place itself. Shirley Jackson’s novel turns a haunted-house investigation into a tense study of loneliness, perception, and a hostile environment that may understand its guests better than they understand themselves.
